Nutritionist Spotlight Series: Stephanie Reed from Unfiltered Wellness
Welcome to the first edition of our Nutritionist Spotlight series!
We're kicking things off strong with Stephanie Reed from Unfiltered Wellness, a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner who’s as passionate about gut health and hormone balancing as she is about her morning eggs and homemade gluten-free tortillas!
Based in Arizona, Stephanie balances her nutrition business with the everyday routine of being a new mom to a 7-month-old.
From her go-to wellness practices like red light therapy to her favorite on-the-go snack, Stephanie’s approach to health is as well-rounded as her family life.
I had the pleasure of working 1-1 with Stephanie in my Private Coaching Program back in 2020 to support her in getting clear on her niche and updating her website to reflect her niche and ideal client better.
Let’s get to know Stephanie and see what makes her both a dedicated nutritionist and an inspiring mom!
What's the first thing you do as soon as you wake up?
I am always hungry when I first wake up, so breakfast is my first priority! I start my day with a very protein heavy meal to make sure I keep my blood sugar stable. As much as I would love to reach for my coffee right away, I prioritize a good meal first so I don't end up with a big cortisol spike.
What does your morning routine look like?
Being a new mom, it's a lot of playing and chasing around my 7 month old! On a typical day I wake up, have breakfast, hang out with my son, and then once he goes down for his nap I start my work or do some self care like a workout, red light therapy, or a nice long shower.
What do you typically eat for breakfast?
My breakfasts are always very protein forward. I eat 2-3 eggs every single morning paired with some sort of meat, like breakfast sausage or leftover steak. Sometimes I'll make it into a breakfast taco on a homemade gluten free tortilla, or I'll do a scramble with veggies.
After breakfast I'll have my cup of coffee, usually with a scoop of protein powder for an extra boost!
What's one food you always have in your fridge or pantry?
Eggs! We go through a LOT of eggs in our house, so we buy 2-3 dozen per week.
What's your most used kitchen gadget/appliance?
Hands down my stainless steel cookware. Cooking with stainless steel is a bit of a learning curve, but once you have it down it's the BEST nontoxic option for cooking.
What's your favourite go-to recipe?
I've recently started making my own tortillas from scratch which has been fun, but if I'm looking for a dinner recipe I will always turn to The Defined Dish. I have all of her cookbooks and I cannot recommend them enough! There truly is not a single bad recipe in there. My favorites are Paleo Lemon Chicken, Green Curry Chicken Soup, and Brisket Tacos.
What does your skincare routine look like? Favourite products?
I keep it pretty simple in the morning. I just wipe my face down with a wet wash cloth and use the Tinted Wonderscreen from DIME beauty.
In the evening, I remove my makeup with cleansing oil from Primally Pure, followed by a toner and eye cream from Oliveda, and then follow up with the Bounceback serum from Clearstem and the TBT Cream from DIME beauty or the Hydraglow Moisturizer from Clearstem. Nontoxic products are a must for me!
What's your favourite go-to supplement?
BodyBio PC. It's a liposomal phospholipid complex that protects and nourishes every cell in your body!
What's one health habit you could not live without?
Red light therapy. I am obsessed with my red light and use it almost every single day. It has made a huge difference in healing my Hashimoto's, it works great for any acute injury or pain, and it's amazing for using as a light at night to keep your circadian rhythm healthy.
What's your favourite way to move your body?
Walking and weightlifting. I try to go on a 30-60 minute walk every single day to get sunshine and get my blood flowing. I'm currently 7 months postpartum after a c-section, so lately my workouts have been mostly centered around healing my core and pelvic floor after pregnancy. I can't wait to get back to lifting heavy weights again!
What's your favourite grab-and-go food?
Paleovalley meat sticks. There are a lot of meat sticks on the market and these are EASILY the best ones! I try to prioritize protein when I'm grabbing snacks to go so these are perfect to throw in my purse or the car when I'm leaving the house.
What's one health habit you're willing to spend money on?
High quality food. Our grocery bill is insane, but I will always prioritize buying organic, grass fed, and pasture raised foods when I can. Our food becomes what our cells are made up of, so prioritizing high quality foods will always be worth it to me.
What's one health trend you're currently loving?
I absolutely LOVE that castor oil packs are having a moment right now. I saw the trend take TikTok by storm and I'm here for it! I've been doing castor oil packs for years and seen how much they can improve digestion, bloating, constipation, and liver health. It's also nearly impossible to do it wrong, so I love that people are jumping on board.
What's one health trend you're not a fan of?
So many things, but the first one that comes to mind is greens powders. I think it's low hanging fruit for people who want to be healthy, but it really won't move the needle when it comes to health if the foundations aren't there.
What's on your bedside table right now?
An old school alarm clock, magnesium lotion, chapstick, and hand lotion!
What does your evening routine look like?
We make dinner pretty early and all eat at the table as a family. After dinner, we'll clean up the kitchen and play with our son for a little while before he goes to bed. After he's down, I do my full skincare routine and sometimes add in a quick shower or red light therapy. Then usually I'll either read or watch a show with my husband before going to bed around 9pm!
What does your typical work day look like?
These days, it's pretty sporadic! Right now I'm a full time stay at home mom with my nutrition business on the side. I try to cluster my client calls and computer work during my son's naps and on the weekends when my husband can take over, but sometimes I'm taking calls with him in my lap. He's usually a welcomed guest on my client calls!
What's your favourite thing about being a Nutritionist?
I love it when my clients pass their first parasite. I do a lot of deeper detox work with my clients and it will never get old seeing the shock (and sometimes horror) that my clients experience when they see what's been living inside of them!
What's your least favourite thing about being a Nutritionist?
Hearing the stories of how people were so deeply failed by the traditional medical system. I have clients who come to me after spending years of their lives and thousands of their hard earned dollars trying to heal without seeing any results. It's disheartening that our standard of care is so poor, but hopefully we'll see some positive change soon!
What big goal do you have for your nutrition business right now?
Right now I'm working on a really comprehensive thyroid healing course. It's going to be a beast and I'm SO excited to get the content out there. Healing my thyroid has been a decade long journey for me so I'm looking forward to sharing what I've learned so other people can fast track their healing. My goal is to have it out there by March, so stay tuned!
